Frequently Asked Questions

1. We’re dying to go. Where is Grounds & Sounds located and how do we get there?

The Grounds and Sounds Café takes place every second Friday of the month in the Sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, NY on Nichols Road, just North of Route 347 (Just minutes from SUNY Stony Brook). Directions are available from the website at http://.groundsandsounds.uufsb.org/directions.htm.

2. What time do the shows start and end?

Every show begins with an open mic at 8PM followed by the featured act at 8:45PM. Normally, shows will run until about 10PM.

3. No doubt, the price of admission is reasonable?

More than reasonable. The price of admission is normally $15, but may vary for certain featured performers. Proceeds will benefit the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stony Brook, NY.

4. Are discounts available for students or seniors?

Why, yes. Students and seniors with ID will be given a $3 discount per ticket.

5. What kind of food and drinks do you serve?

Well for starters, there’s coffee. For coffee lovers we have a selection of gourmet specialties, or you can just grab a cup of our house blend “fair trade” coffee. We also serve specialty teas plus cold drinks such as juices and ice tea. We sell homemade cookies, pastries, brownies and other confections, or you can choose an assortment of cheese, crackers and fruit to go with wine if you choose to bring a bottle. (There is a small opening fee for wine.) Beer and other types of alcohol are not permitted.

6. We would love to come, but our children would be left unattended and would likely dismantle our home while we were gone. Is there babysitting available?

Yes, child care will be available for a nominal fee.

7. I’m phenomenally talented. How do I get my act get booked for the café?

Any musicians interested in being booked as featured performers at the Grounds and Sounds café should contact Michael Hoffman at groundsandsounds@uufsb.org.

8. Who can sign up for the open mic?

The open mic is available for any musician, poet or performance artist on a first come-first serve basis. Each open mic participant is invited to perform one song, poem or act and limit the length of their performance to 6 minutes.

9. Does the café have its own sound system?

Yes. Performers generally only need to bring their instruments. The sound system is equipped to handle moderately sized, primarily acoustic acts.
